My Muffin Top Exercises Toolbox: The Bodyweight Squat

In the last post I promised I would show you some of my favourite muffin top exercises to really work your core. Remember, you’ve already got a fantastic, sexy stomach underneath that layer of fat, but exercise alone will not cut it! It’ll help, but you also need to adjust your diet…

I know, that’s the last thing we want to hear, but if you take it one step at a time, you can do it, honest! So cut down the candy, the soft drinks, the cakes etc. etc. Anything with lots of sugar, lots of calories and little nutritional value. Or as a mentor of mine used to say: “If man made it, don’t eat it!” You don’t have to deprive yourself (where’s the fun in that), but try it out and you’ll soon see that eating a healthy clean, healthy diet can be just as delicious.

So here’s a secret about muffin top exercises: it’s not about the crunches!

Everyone want’s to start out doing 1000′s of crunches or situps because that’s where it looks like the fat is. But remember what we talked about last time? That’s right, you can’t spot reduce fat! So targeting your stomach area or your love handles, with a specific exercise, isn’t going to magically make those muffin tops dissappear.

Crunches are fine, but don’t do 1000s of them – it can actually be bad for your posture since it pulls the muscles forward. So, on to one of my favourite muffin top exercises – the bodyweight squat! Here’s how you do it:

Step 1: Stand with your feet shoulder width apart, feet straight if possible (and comfortable).

Step 2: Squat down as if you’re about to sit into an imaginary chair, keeping your knees in line with your feet. Keep your back straight and your weight pressed down into your heels.

Step 3: Return to standing position and then rinse and repeat.

And that’s it! Start with what you can do and aim to get 3 sets of 10 squats (taking a brief rest between sets). Simple and effective, burns away fat from your mid-section and tones up your butt too!

Step Up The Intensity with your Muffin Top Exercises!

Did you know that your muffin top has a dirty little secret? It’s true! Your muffin top is just plain body fat. That may sound bad, but it’s actually good news, because it means that we can get rid of it just like any other body fat. What you can’t do is ‘spot-reduce’ (which is just another way of saying that you can’t get rid of fat in just one area). I know, I know… it sounds like hard work, but stick with me because I’ve got a couple of tricks in my gym bag which will help you melt that muffin top away – once and for all – to get you looking good and feeling great! Sound good?

The first gym-bag secret is: intensity. Or something we call HIIT (high intensity interval training). Whew, a bit of a mouthful, but it’s super easy and you can do it with any cardio exercise – jogging, walking, cycling. So pick the one you love the most and let’s do it! Here’s how it works:

Step 1: The 5 minute warm up – start things slowly to get the blood flowing. Keep the exercise within a low to moderate level. Do not skip this stage! You must warm up properly to avoid injury.

Step 2: Step up the intensity! For the next 60 seconds, up the intensity of the exercise so that it’s much harder (but not flat out – about 70% of your max). So for example, you can go from a jog to a run; or run up stairs or another incline; etc. etc. Anything which makes it harder. Keep this up for 60 seconds – you can do it!

Step 3: Bring it back. Drop the intensity for about two minutes, so you can recover – a bit more intense than your warm up.

Step 4: Rinse and repeat! Keep it up for 10 to 20 minutes.

Step 5: Wrap it up. Cool down for 5 minutes at a low-level of intensity.

I guarantee that if you stick to this, you will melt away that muffin top in no time. In my next posts I’m going to reveal some of the BEST muffin top exercises I’ve found. You’ll even be able to combine them with this intensity workout to melt those muffin tops away even faster!
